Most of this comes down to the variety of sounds and song structures on hand. So it’s hard to get an exact idea of what B2 Unit is it defies labelling. Where that’s a useful and accurate feeling is up for debate, but either way, my brain has spoken. Outside of a few accessible points, it feels like a very early take on the ideas that would coalesce into the IDM movement of the ’90s onwards. B2 Unit represents his second attempt to fill his breeches, and it’s quite the album to discuss! For 1980, this is some pretty wild, experimental stuff (though I’m sure you could easily find even more challenging recordings). Apparently YMO wasn’t enough for Ryuichi Sakamoto.
